Damaged tree on Coburg Crescent – Update

Lambeth Tree works attended the damaged tree on Coburg Crescent last month to remove the broken branch and make safe. Following on from that work Lambeth tree works have regrettably made the decision to have what’s left of this cherry tree removed.

“After the large branch failure the tree is now very unbalanced, with a risk of further failures occurring. The cherry was found to be in a rather poor overall condition, with less than half the crown now remaining and decay visible in the stem at the main union. There is also dieback recorded in the tips of the remaining branch.

I did give consideration to reducing the remaining branch in an attempt to lower the sail area, but as the tree is demonstrating reduced vitality and a compromised union, remedial pruning works to reduce the size of the crown would likely accelerate the trees decline. With the crown condition being as it is, it’s retention would therefore be only a short-term solution to provide limited amenity value, with the risk from further failure at the weakened fork persisting. I therefore made a decision that pruning was unfortunately not a viable option.

I expect the works to be completed within the next 3 months, commensurate to the risk currently posed from further branch/stem failure. A felling notice will be affixed to the tree ahead of the works to inform the residents. If you have any further questions please let me know and I’ll do my best to answer them.”

PRERA have reached out to Poppy at the tree planting programme and they will add that location to the 25/26 planting list to try and allocate us a tree during the next tree planting season from October 2025 to April 2026.
