Additional tree works

The Lambeth tree team raised an order in October to remove a beech tree on the Palace Road Estate growing on the boundary with Christchurch Road. The tree was flagged by a TfL surveyor as being of concern , and an inspection of the tree was carried out it was confirmed to present significant hazard to the highway.

“The beech tree was seen to have an extensive colonisation of the giant polypore fungus (Meripilus Giganteus) around the base. This fungus actively decays the roots of host trees and is often attributed to wind throw of beech trees in particular. The beech tree in question is demonstrating significantly reduced vitality, with a sparse crown and small leaf size, suggestive of root dysfunction, which would indicate the fungal infection is now at an relatively advanced stage. As it would likely fall into the highway, there is an intolerable risk posed from foreseeable entire tree failure and a decision has unfortunately been made to remove the tree as a priority. Following removal, the site will be recorded for possible replacement as part of the council’s current planting programme. Replacement planting will be subject to available funding, with prioritisation based on the criteria set out in the Lambeth Urban Forest Strategy 2023-2030 and subject to agreement from our colleagues in the Housing Service.”
